Did you know that if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow there’s going to be 6 more weeks (44 days) of winter and if he does not see his shadow there is only going to be 42 days of winter left? So why do we dedicate a day to the Groundhog?

Punxsutawney Phil. A name famous for close to 100 years as the unofficial winter weather forecaster of Pennsylvania. In more recent years, he has achieved notoriety as the beloved, unofficial furry star of the movie, “Groundhog Day” with Bill Murray. Each year, close to 30,000 people descend upon the normally sleepy community of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness this groundhog emerge from his burrow and ask, did the groundhog see his shadow? Well, technically, Phil is removed from his burrow by gentlemen attired in tuxedos and top hats, but it is a fun event regardless of how he comes out.

Stemming from an ancient German superstition, Groundhog day is a celebrated tradition. If a groundhog sees it’s shadow on the ancient Christian holiday of Candlemas on February 2, it means six more weeks of winter, and if the hibernating rodent does not, then spring is on it’s way. In addition to the famous little weather prognosticator Punxsutawney Phil, is his Southern cousin and colleague, General Beauregard Lee of Lilburn, Georgia. In recent years, the question of did the groundhog see his shadow has been answered differently by the two famous groundhogs. In all fairness, though, Georgia does not usually see any actual winter weather, so that may account for the discrepancies between the colleagues.

This Groundhog’s Day, 2009, Punxsutawney Phil did see his shadow!

What does Groundhog’s Day mean to you?

President Elect Barack Obama will give his inaguration speech Tuesday, January 20th, 2009 and will take the thrown as the 44th President of the United States of America. CNN begins Inaguration Speech 2009 coverage live at Capitol Hill bright and early at 5 a.m. and will continue to do so throughout the day. Security gates will open at 8 a.m. for the swearing in and over 4,000,000 people are expected to be in attendance and billions to be viewing in worldwide – numbers rivaling that of the Olympics and the World Cup.

10 a.m. marks the start of the Inaguration ceremonies which are loaded with history and suspense. At 10:30 a.m. Aretha Franklin, who sang at Bill Clinton’s first Inaguration Ceremony, will sing and Joe Biden, Obama’s Vice President, will be sworn in as VP of the United States. This will be his 2nd time being sworn-in this year as he took oath for his 7th term in the Senate Jan. 6, then officially resigned the seat Jan. 15.

Barack Obama will be officially sworn-in as the 44th President of the United States at noon eastern standard time and will recite the same oath as his 43 predecessors, as prescribed by the Constitution:

“I do solemnly affirm that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Soon there after, he will deliver his first speech as President of the United States of America which is highly anticipated and for good reason. The United States is on the cusp of the worst economic depression in history. Between the increasing numbers in layoffs to the increased cost of living we really need change. Between 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. President Obama will see Former President George W. Bush to the departure ceremony at Capitol Hill. Former President Bush will share some final words of “wisdom” and hopefully never be heard from again.

The 56th-Inagural Parade begins at 2:30 p.m. and will continue through the late afternoon and early evening until 6 p.m. and expect Obama, his wife Michelle Obama, Joe Biden, and his wife Jill Biden to walk a strech of the parade out of their limosine – a tradition started by Jimmy Carter and now a standard tradition for Presidents during this Inagural Parade.

Will Barack Obama succeed in the challenges that face the United States? Time will tell so for now let’s give him a chance. Hopefully nobody tries anything radical during the speech or the inagural parade – we need Barack!
