Heath Ledger Death Anniversary, Backlash

by Alex Becker on January 22, 2009

Today marks the 1 year anniversary of Heath Ledgers untimely death. He recently won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for his portrayal as Joker in The Dark Knight. Many consider this to be foreshadowing of a future Oscar award for the now late actor. In addition, earlier in January, Christian Bale dedicated The Dark Knight People’s Choice Award to Heath.

Heath would be 29 today and suffered the fate of many famous people before him such as Kurt Kobain, Bradley Nowell, and Chris Farley – people who died before they were recognized for their greatness. It feels like 1 month not 1 year has passed since his death and when I seeing him in movies can sometimes be unsettling.

In looking at the last known photo of Ledger taken January 19, 2008 you can see a very absent and confused young man looking back at the camera. Almost as if he was trying to tell us something without saying anything. Whatever mental state he was in during his passing is irrelevant – he was a fine actor, husband, and father and that’s what he should be remembered for. Rest in Peace.

At one point there was a heath ledger death backlash as people said he only got the accolades out of sympathy.  Even Even Jonathon Ross, reported by the Mirror, on his show couldn’t help himself from lambasting the late actor. People seem to forget that Obsessed With Film spoke about the early “legendary performance of Heath Ledger” as the Joker.
